Marine research requires both crew expertise and specialized, rugged equipment capable of withstanding harsh offshore environments. To meet these demands, Izhora Hydrosystems has successfully delivered a heavy-duty A-frame LARS. The unit is fully operational aboard the research vessel Akademik Sergey Vavilov, operated by the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Engineered Beyond Standard Solutions

Open-sea operations expose deck machinery to severe structural loads. Oceanographic surveys involve deployment and recovery of trawls, dredges, sensor arrays, and survey systems over the vessel stern. This equipment must operate reliably under high heel angles, strong winds, icing conditions, and corrosive salt spray that typically degrade standard structures.

Conventional lifting systems frequently fail during prolonged marine deployment, demanding excessive maintenance and frequent repairs. This vulnerability is especially critical when handling the heavy loads and specialized tools required for trawling and dredging.

Technical Specifications for Deep-Sea Missions

Izhora Hydrosystems engineered this A-frame with a hydraulic luffing system (outboard/inboard movement) designed to handle loads up to 60 kN. The frame integrates an electrical control system and inclinometers for continuous spatial positioning monitoring, while heavy-duty limit switches ensure safety at extreme travel limits.

The structure is fabricated from 09G2S grade steel, selected for high resistance to seawater corrosion and thermal shocks. All movable mechanisms feature grease nipples for simplified lubrication access. The hydraulic cylinders are fitted with spherical plain bearings to maximize component service life.

Safety features include a completely sealed hydraulic system with integrated relief valves. The entire control system is optimized for single-operator use, significantly reducing crew workload.

Operational Impact

The A-frame LARS expands capabilities for domestic oceanographic research. Installed aboard the RV Akademik Sergey Vavilov, the system is fully operational in marine expeditions conducted by the Institute of Oceanology of the RAS, ensuring reliable deployment and recovery of complex instrumentation during geological and biological resource surveys.

4. Additional Requirements

4.1 Design and Structural Requirements

  • Configuration: Modular or skid-mounted design optimized for maximum integration.
  • Structural material: 09G2S grade steel compliant with GOST 5520-2017.

4.5 Preservation and Packaging

  • Port protection: All hydraulic connection ports and pipe interfaces are blanked off with protective plugs.
  • Transport configuration: The equipment can be disassembled into sub-assemblies for transit.
  • Packaging: The SPTA kit and components (excluding large structural steelwork) are packed in crates and secured to prevent transit damage.
  • Shipping documents: A shipping manifest or packing list signed by the Izhora Hydrosystems Quality Control Department (QC) is enclosed within each crate.
  • Shipping marking: Marking complies with GOST 14192-96.
  • Document protection: Technical documentation and packing lists are sealed in waterproof plastic wrapping compliant with GOST 10354-82.

4.6  Installation, Commissioning, Storage, and Disposal

  • Installation: Performed on permanent foundations in compliance with OST 5R.4110-2003 and technical specifications (TS).
  • Flushing and testing: Hydraulic system installation, flushing, and testing must comply with OST 5.9527-94 and OST 5Р.5599-92 (Class 2 cleanliness rating).
  • Instrumentation calibration: Recalibration intervals must follow specific manufacturer requirements for each measurement device.
  • Fasteners: Mounting bolts and nuts must have a minimum property class of 10.9 and 10 respectively, compliant with GOST ISO 898-1-2014 and GOST ISO 898-2-2015.
  • Maintenance accessibility: Partial disassembly for SPTA replacement is permitted onboard without removing the main equipment from its foundation.
  • Storage requirements: Equipment must be placed on support blocks. Stacking is prohibited.
  • Preservation storage: Preserved units must be stored in designated areas in accordance with the operations manual.
  • Transportation: Authorized for transit via rail, sea, and road. Handling must strictly follow the care markings on the packaging.
  • Disposal and recycling: Performed in compliance with Federal Law No. 89-FZ “On Production and Consumption Waste” and local environmental regulations.

6. Warranty Period
