1. General Information (Operating Conditions)

The hydraulic power unit and control system operate reliably in marine environments under the following conditions:

  • Ambient air temperature outside the vessel: -10 °C to +40 °C
  • Continuous vessel heel to any side: up to 5°
  • Continuous vessel trim by bow or stern: up to 2°
  • Vessel vibration

Operating conditions in stowed position:

  • Ambient air temperature outside the vessel: -20 °C to +45 °C
  • Vessel heel to any side: up to 15°
  • Vessel trim by bow or stern: up to 5°

2. Purpose

The central hydraulic power unit is designed to supply hydraulic fluid (hydraulic oil) with specified flow/pressure characteristics to the following consumers: 1 x knuckle boom crane (KMC), 2 x conveyor oil skimmers (starboard/port), 1 x bucket oil skimmer, 2 x shell doors (starboard/port).

Central Hydraulic Power Unit: The Power Hub for Maritime Workhorses

Continuous, round-the-clock operations define the deck of a modern vessel. Cranes handle cargo, oil skimmers clear the water, and shell doors open the hull to receive equipment. All these systems require one essential thing: a reliable hydraulic drive. However, providing power without cluttering the vessel with dozens of separate motors or risking equipment failure during a storm remains a critical challenge.

When Hydraulics Become a Bottleneck

Equipping each mechanism with its own dedicated pump is a classic yet outdated approach. It leads to overcrowded engine rooms, maintenance challenges, and high power consumption. The alternative is a single, centralized hydraulic power unit that acts as the mechanical heart of the vessel. Yet, the marine environment imposes strict demands: the equipment must withstand up to 15 degrees of heel, continuous vibration, salt spray, and operate flawlessly in conditions ranging from Arctic freezes to tropical heat.

In recent years, imported solutions have become difficult to source, while their maintenance demands foreign specialists and rare spare parts. Vessel owners require a clear, domestic, and highly serviceable system they can rely on throughout any voyage.

Two Pumps, One Goal

The general marine power unit by Izhora Hydrosystems LLC is built around twin pumping units. Two 30 kW electric motors with variable displacement tandem pumps operate as a single organism. The total output reaches 150 liters per minute at a pressure of 150 bar. This capacity is sufficient to power all deck equipment, from the knuckle boom crane to the conveyor oil skimmers on both sides of the vessel.

The dual-pump configuration provides a critical advantage: redundancy. If one circuit is down for scheduled maintenance or in the event of an emergency, the second loop continues supplying fluid to consumers. The vessel remains fully operational at critical moments.

Marine Durability in Every Detail

The designers addressed the primary challenge of marine hydraulics: vessel motion. The power unit maintains stable operation during continuous heel up to 5 degrees and trim up to 2 degrees. In the stowed position, the allowable limits extend to 15 degrees of heel. This ensures that even in heavy seas, the crane operator can perform tasks safely.

All electrical components exposed to the open deck are protected to IP56 standards, withstanding sea spray, heavy rain, and washing waves. The 2Ex d IIB T4 explosion-proof execution ensures safe operation during oil spill response when the risk of hazardous vapor formation is high. The low-pour-point hydraulic fluid retains fluidity at low temperatures, while a fluid cleanliness level conforming to Class 12 (GOST) guarantees a long service life for all hydraulic components.

Intuitive Control System

In the past, operators had to move constantly between different control stations. Now, the approach is completely different. The main power cabinet housing the controller stays in the engine room, acting as the brain of the system. On deck, a centralized control panel allows the operator to manage all consumers from a single location. The crane operator can see exactly what the oil skimmer is doing, and vice versa, making operational coordination simple and intuitive.

For complex operations, optional remote control units are available. With both wired and wireless radio options, the operator can stand directly next to the working equipment for precise control. This is particularly crucial during oil spill response operations, where every meter of the oil slick matters.

Comprehensive Product Support

Every piece of machinery requires timely maintenance. The manufacturer includes a two-year supply of spare parts, tools, and accessories (SPTA) in the standard delivery set. Filters, seals, and wear parts are already on board, eliminating wait times for parts delivery. Furthermore, the documentation package features detailed installation and operating instructions in Russian, along with a comprehensive test program and a product passport.

A 12-month warranty from the shipment date reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in the equipment. In addition, RKO certificates confirm that the power unit is fully approved for operation on vessels under the supervision of the Russian Classification Society.

Practical Value

The central hydraulic power unit addresses multiple operational challenges simultaneously. It standardizes the drive system for all deck machinery, simplifies control, enhances reliability through redundancy, and is fully adapted to actual offshore operating conditions.

4. Additional Requirements

  • All electrical equipment located on the open deck has an IP56 protection class.
  • All electrical equipment located on the open deck has a 2Ex d IIB T4 explosion-proof execution.
  • All materials are resistant to operating temperature conditions (-10 °C … +40 °C).
  • Painting: the painting scheme and color shall be agreed upon with the Customer.
  • Hydraulic system fluid: AUP.
  • Fluid cleanliness class according to GOST 17216-71: not lower than Class 12.

Options (not included in the standard scope of supply):

  • Remote control panels (with signal transmission via cable and radio channel) for the knuckle boom crane, conveyor oil skimmers (starboard/port), bucket oil skimmer, and shell doors (starboard/port).
