Conveyor oil skimmer, 30 m³/h capacity (Technical supply specification)

1. General Information (Operating Conditions)

The conveyor oil skimmer ensures reliable operation under the following marine conditions:

  • Ambient air temperature: -10 °C to +40 °C
  • Continuous heel (either port or starboard): Up to 5°
  • Continuous trim (bow or stern): Up to 2°
  • Wind pressure: Max. 400 Pa
  • Shipboard vibration: Compliant
  • Intermittent sea water splashing: Resistant

2. Purpose

The equipment is designed for stationary oil recovery operations. During ice-free periods, it recovers oil from water surfaces enclosed by oil booms. During ice periods, it operates within ice leads and open water spaces between ice floes. The conveyor oil skimmer integrates into the vessel’s internal hull structure and can be customized by the manufacturer to match specific vessel designs.

About

Conveyor Oil Skimmer: High-Efficiency Oil Recovery in Challenging Environments

Consider a northern port area or an oil terminal within the Arctic region operating under harsh conditions: heavy seas, sub-zero ambient temperatures, and spreading oil spills on the water surface. Alternatively, consider an ice field with open water leads covered by a thin oil film. Conventional skimmers fail in these environments, as they become clogged with frazil ice, cannot access the spill areas, or recover excessive amounts of water rather than hydrocarbons. Regulatory and environmental standards demand rapid, high-efficiency spill response.

Limitations of Conventional Recovery Systems

Most oil skimmers utilize weir or suction recovery principles, which extract the top fluid layer. In heavy seas, continuous wave action mixes the oil and water, causing pumps to intake high-water-content emulsions. In icy conditions, ice floes obstruct skimmer deployment to the required operating depth and cause mechanical damage. Furthermore, vessel motion—including yaw, heel, and trim variations—breaks the contact between conventional equipment and the oil slick.

Adhesion Principle

Engineers developed a mechanical solution to overcome these challenges. The conveyor oil skimmer does not extract water; instead, it recovers oil mechanically by leveraging its physical adhesion properties. An endless belt with a bristled coating passes through the oil slick. The oil adheres to the bristles and moves upward, where a doctor blade scrapes it into a dedicated hopper. From there, the recovered product is transferred by a pump. This method minimizes water content because water does not adhere to the bristled surface.

From a technical perspective, a chain conveyor with a bristled coating is tensioned between a drive shaft and an idle shaft equipped with double-strand sprockets. A hydraulic motor, with a rated flow of 10–45 l/min and an operating pressure of 21 MPa, drives the belt. The recovered oil flows into the receiving hopper, where a heavy-duty submersible Archimedes screw pump handles the high-viscosity product.

Marine and Ice Adaptation

The primary feature of this model is its adaptation to actual marine environments. The unit operates continuously during a vessel heel of up to 5° (either port or starboard) and a trim of up to 2°, maintaining belt contact with the fluid surface despite vessel motion. The housing and mechanical components withstand intermittent sea water splashing, and all electrical enclosures feature IP56 protection. During ice periods, the design enables operation within ice leads and open water spaces between ice floes.

Materials are selected for an ambient temperature range of -10 °C to +40 °C. The hydraulic system utilizes AUP hydraulic fluid to maintain low-temperature fluidity. The explosion-proof design (explosion protection rating 2Ex IIT4) ensures safe operation in hazardous areas where flammable oil vapors are present.

Integration and Operational Readiness

The manufacturer designed the conveyor oil skimmer for direct integration into the vessel’s hull structure rather than as a standalone deck-mounted module. This configuration allows the equipment to be seamlessly integrated into specific vessel designs during the engineering or modernization phase. Control systems include a standard portable console as well as optional remote control stations, allowing the operator to position themselves for optimal visibility of the oil slick.

The performance parameters deliver reliable operational efficiency: a rated capacity of 30 m³/h with a total weight of approximately 360 kg. Furthermore, the scope of supply includes a 2-year operational spare parts kit (complying with standard SPT requirements) and a comprehensive documentation package, ranging from technical data books to installation manuals. The conveyor oil skimmer is backed by a 12-month warranty from the date of shipment.

Conclusion

The conveyor oil skimmer from Izhora Hydrosystems LLC fills a critical operational gap where conventional skimmers fail: performing efficiently in heavy seas, icy environments, and under dynamic vessel motion. The mechanical recovery principle eliminates dependency on water-to-oil ratios, while the robust hydraulic design and coating systems ensure long-term reliability in aggressive marine environments. For ports, oil terminals, and vessels operating in the Arctic and Far East regions, this system provides a dependable solution for rapid spill response in high-challenge zones.
