About

Telescopic Boom Marine Crane for Offshore Operations: Maximizing Efficiency in Confined Spaces

A fishing vessel operating in the Sea of Okhotsk encounters severe conditions: a subsiding storm with a 5-degree heel angle and an ambient temperature of -30 °C. The task requires lifting a 2-tonne container with catch onto the deck from an 8-meter outreach. While standard marine equipment might fail under these conditions, the new electro-hydraulic telescopic boom crane by Izhora Hydrosystems handles the operation.

Challenges of Marine Lifting Operations

Marine cranes operate under environmental conditions considered extreme for onshore equipment. Continuous vibration, constant exposure to seawater splash, and operations at significant heel and trim angles require specialized engineering solutions. Coupled with Arctic cold or tropical heat, standard cranes are unsuitable for these applications.

A key requirement of marine lifting operations is the necessity to operate with variable boom outreach. The application requires handling cargo both at close range and at maximum outreach. This flexibility highlights the advantages of the telescopic design.

Engineering Solution for Marine Environments

The telescopic boom crane engineered by Izhora Hydrosystems features an outreach range from 2 m to 8 m. This design optimizes load capacity performance: the safe working load (SWL) is 3 t at a 5.2 m outreach and 2 t at the maximum 8 m outreach.

The crane design is optimized for marine specifications. Continuous slewing enables operation in any direction relative to the vessel, while a slewing speed of at least 1 rpm ensures efficient load positioning under sea state conditions.

The hydraulic system utilizes AUP fluid, a specialized formulation that maintains properties at marine operating temperatures. A fluid cleanliness class of no less than Grade 12 (per GOST 17216-71) ensures reliable hydraulic performance against seawater and moisture ingress.

Adaptation to Extreme Environmental Conditions

The operating temperature range of the crane covers from -30 °C to +25 °C in working mode, and from -40 °C to +45 °C in stowed position. This ensures the equipment operates in both Arctic waters and tropical latitudes without supplemental heating or cooling systems.

The electrical equipment features an IP56 protection rating, ensuring resistance to seawater spray and dust ingress. All components are designed for operation at a heel angle up to 5° and a trim angle up to 2°, reflecting typical conditions for a vessel in heavy seas.

The crane control system includes two control stations: a local control station on the slewing platform and a remote cable control pendant. This configuration allows the operator to select the safest and most advantageous position to monitor lifting operations.

Technical Performance in Operation

A hoisting speed of no less than 10 m/min provides optimal performance for marine environments. It ensures precise load positioning during vessel motion and allows the operator to maintain full control over the process.

A lowering depth of no less than 25 m below the crane foundation deck level enables extensive operations with submerged equipment. This capability is critical for research vessels, fishing trawlers, and workboats.

The hydraulic winch drive delivers smooth operation and high positioning accuracy, which are critical when handling high-value cargo or loading ship stores and provisions under sea state conditions.

Field Application

A crane deadweight of 5.2 t complies with marine standard limits, considering structural strength and functionality requirements. Power supply from a standard 380V onboard mains grid simplifies integration into existing vessel systems.

Significance for Domestic Shipbuilding

The development of this domestically manufactured equipment carries strategic importance. The crane is certified in accordance with the requirements of RF Government Decree No. 719, validating its manufacture within the Russian Federation.

A warranty period of 12 months from the delivery date, combined with OEM technical support, ensures operational reliability. For the domestic fleet, this guarantees independence from foreign suppliers and ensures prompt field service maintenance.

The telescopic boom marine crane by Izhora Hydrosystems demonstrates domestic engineering capabilities in resolving complex technical challenges within the marine industry. The equipment is optimized for regional operating conditions and provides shipowners with a reliable tool for handling lifting operations under all sea states.
