About

Electro-Hydraulic Marine Research Crane: Engineering Solutions for Extreme Operating Conditions

Consider a research vessel operating in the Barents Sea. With an ambient temperature of -25°C, sea state 3 conditions, and the requirement to handle a 5t oceanographic research payload on deck, standard equipment fails to meet operational demands. This specialized application requires the electro-hydraulic marine crane designed by Izhora Hydrosystems.

Limitations of Standard Marine Cranes

Marine research operations involve handling diverse equipment under severe environmental conditions. Research vessels encounter operating parameters that exceed the capabilities of standard marine cranes. Safe handling of complex scientific payloads must be maintained at a vessel heel of up to 10°, vessel trim of up to 2°, and under continuous vessel vibration. Furthermore, the equipment must remain fully operational across an ambient temperature range from arctic conditions of -25°C to tropical environments of +34°C.

Conventional cranes frequently fail to comply with these extreme operational requirements. Standard units are either oversized, lack sufficient structural resistance to marine loads, or necessitate dedicated onboard machinery spaces. Historically, domestic shipbuilders relied on foreign procurement to source equipment meeting these technical criteria.

Engineering Solutions for Marine Environments

Engineers at Izhora Hydrosystems have developed a knuckle-boom crane configuration featuring an 18m maximum outreach and continuous 360-degree slewing. The 5t rated capacity is maintained at maximum outreach, while the boom assembly can be retracted to a minimum outreach of 2.2m to optimize deck space.

The structural and mechanical design centers on an integrated hydraulic system. The entire hydraulic power pack and valve assembly are housed inside the crane column (slewing pedestal), eliminating the need for external deck-mounted piping or auxiliary machinery spaces. The complete system is powered via a single shipboard electrical feeder.

For Arctic operations, the equipment integrates an electrical enclosure heating system and a hydraulic oil pre-heating system. These thermal management solutions ensure reliable starting and continuous operation at ambient temperatures down to -25°C.

Technical Specifications

The operational parameters are engineered for marine applications. A 30m maximum hook travel enables operations with deep-sea equipment, while a hoisting speed of 10 m/min ensures efficient load handling during vessel motion. Control flexibility is provided by a dual-station configuration consisting of a stationary control panel and a portable remote control unit with a 15m cable, allowing the operator optimal visibility during deck operations.

All electrical and mechanical components feature IP56 protection ratings to withstand heavy seas and severe weather conditions. The 250W boom-tip floodlight complies with the same ingress protection standard, enabling uninterrupted operations during polar night conditions.

Operational Impact

The marine crane engineered by Izhora Hydrosystems delivers a comprehensive solution for extreme environments. Equipment reliability is supported by a manufacturer warranty, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS) certification, and a two-year operational spare parts package.

Amid import substitution requirements, this equipment provides critical operational independence. Domestic research organizations are now equipped with a reliable system for operations that previously depended on foreign suppliers, expanding marine research capabilities and supporting scientific advancement.
