About

Why a Telescopic LARS is a Smart Solution

A telescopic overhead LARS is a system engineered to adapt dynamically to environmental conditions. Its defining feature is a variable-length mechanism that ensures precise and safe boat deployment, even during severe vessel motions and heavy seas. This operational flexibility guarantees safety and reliability for personnel onboard.

Dual Control System: Flexibility and Operational Command

The modern LARS is equipped with two control units: a fixed console and a portable handset. This configuration allows the operator to select the optimal vantage point, remaining close to the operation or maintaining a safe distance. Automated control systems modulate hoisting and lowering speeds, eliminating shock loads and ensuring smooth, predictable transit.

Engineered for Extreme Environments

The LARS is design-rated for operation across a wide temperature range, from -30 °C to +45 °C, making it suitable for both Arctic seas and tropical latitudes. Anti-condensation heating protects electrical components from moisture damage, while integrated floodlights ensure reliable night operations.

Safety and Motion Compensation in Heavy Seas

Vessel motion presents a critical challenge for marine equipment. The overhead LARS incorporates shock absorbers and constant tension systems to attenuate dynamic impacts and vibrations. This feature preserves structural integrity and ensures the safety of personnel inside the craft.

Reliable Power Supply Architecture

The system features a redundant power supply configuration with an automatic transfer switch (ATS) in case of a primary power failure. In the event of a total blackout, the system enables emergency gravity lowering of the craft and safe recovery of the LARS to its stowed position, eliminating hazardous conditions.

4. Additional Requirements

  • Safe launch and recovery of the boat with personnel onboard is ensured at mother vessel speeds up to and including 5 knots (subject to sea state).
  • Launch and recovery operations of the workboat are performed via a single-point suspension system.
  • Manned launch and recovery capabilities are guaranteed at sea states up to and including Sea State 4.
To facilitate this, the LARS incorporates the following systems:
    • Automatic slack rope take-up device
    • Shock absorber for rope load attenuation
    • Boat docking and locking mechanism relative to the LARS boom tip
  • The control system enables operation from both the fixed console and the portable handset.
  • Hoisting and lowering control from the fixed station is executed via a joystick, providing proportional speed control relative to the deflection angle.
  • Identical proportional control is integrated into the portable handset.
  • The system automatically shifts to low-speed mode as the craft approaches the LARS boom tip.
  • The control system automatically terminates the hoisting operation when the upper limit switch position is reached.
  • The winch features a wave compensation function (constant tension mode).
  • The overhead workboat LARS is equipped with a hydraulic bow boom with a docking head/fender setup.
  • An anti-condensation heating system is integrated.
  •  Illumination of the launch and recovery operational zone is provided.
  • All nameplates, labels, and markings on the equipment are executed in Russian.
  •  The final topcoat of the coating system is subject to approval by the vessel designer.
  • LARS Power Supply:
    • Main power: 380 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase AC supply (without neutral).
    • Power quality complies with RMRS requirements.
    • Automatic transfer switch to reserve power upon failure of the main supply.
    • Automatic reverse switching upon main voltage restoration.
    • Emergency gravity lowering and recovery to the stowed position are enabled during a total blackout.
    • Hoisting mechanisms are equipped with fail-safe, normally-closed brakes.
