2. Purpose

4. Additional Requirements

The system configuration consists of a hydraulically driven, telescopic, luffing boom assembly.
The boom is designed for overhead mounting onto the deckhead (T-beam stiffeners) inside the hangar and extends outboard through a hatch opening.

The system features a pivoting sheave arrangement with a specialized docking head for CTD rosette handling, alongside a sheave train directing the umbilical/wire rope to the winch. To facilitate umbilical sheave and docking head maintenance, the boom can be lowered to the deck level.

The sheave design allows for umbilical reeving without dismantling the cable connector. Control is provided via a portable, backpack-type wireless control panel.

The telescopic LARS is equipped with:

  • Automatic load limiters acting at overloads exceeding 10% of the nominal SWL in calm water and a minimum of 25% under sea state conditions
  • A protection system triggered when the rosette contacts the docking head
  • An audible alarm horn activated from the control panel
  • A floodlight for working area illumination

Power supply for the boom is delivered from the shipboard hydraulic system with a nominal pressure of 250 bar and a rated flow of up to 200 l/min.

Operational Stability and Safety:

The telescopic LARS maintains structural integrity and remains fully functional after exposure to the following conditions when secured in the stowed position:

  • Vessel heel up to 15º
  • Vessel trim up to 5º
  • Roll amplitude up to 40º
  • Pitch amplitude up to 10º
  • Wind load up to 2,000 Pa (200 kgf/m²)

An emergency manual override is provided to return the boom to the stowed position in the event of a power failure.

Hydraulic cylinders are fitted with pilot-operated check valves with control line adjustment or sealed counterbalance valves to ensure smooth movement and positive holding in intermediate positions, as well as hose-burst protection valves.
