Gantry Deck Crane with Auxiliary Manipulator
Model 20T

Electric-driven gantry cranes are designed for cargo handling, transfer, and stowage of deck hatch covers, as well as other auxiliary operations.

The design ensures efficient handling of large-size cargo along the full length of the deck, while an auxiliary crane manipulator enables prompt handling of smaller loads. This solution ensures reliable and stable lifting operations in maritime environments.

The Model 20T gantry crane ensures reliable handling of deck hatch cover sections up to 20 t and 13.5 m in width. The auxiliary crane manipulator allows efficient handling of loads of up to 3 t, enabling their lifting onto the deck and subsequent transfer.

Upper frame

(highlighted in blue)

The upper frame is a steel structure that serves as the primary load-bearing element of the crane. It provides mounting for the hoisting winches, sheave blocks, cable drum, and the auxiliary crane manipulator. The design ensures enhanced reliability, efficiency, and operational stability of all installed equipment.

Gantry legs

(highlighted in blue)

The gantry legs reliably carry the upper frame and transfer loads to the travel bogies. This design ensures stability and uniform load distribution, maintaining stable crane operation.

Travel bogies

(highlighted in blue)

The travel bogies enable crane movement along the rail track. The design ensures reliability through flanged drive wheels, an anti-tip locking device, and buffers. Additional safety is provided by a rail sweeper, which clears foreign objects from the rails.

Winches

(highlighted in blue)

The hoisting winches ensure safe and reliable handling of loads up to 20 t. The design, based on a welded drum and drives incorporating a gearbox, brake, and electric motor, provides precise and safe lifting. The reeving system protects the wire ropes from wear, increasing service life.

The Crane That Works Amidst the Waves: How to Open a Giant’s Hold

When we look at a massive container ship, we only see the tip of the iceberg. The real magic is hidden inside — in the holds filled with cargo. But how do you reach that cargo when the hatches are battened down and the vessel is in port under gusts of salty wind? The answer is a specialized marine crane. Today, we take a look inside a 20-ton “strongman” that doesn’t just lift heavy loads, but also knows how to stow away below deck, endure storms, and operate without fear of explosions.

A Crane for a Special Mission

An ordinary portal crane is a sight to behold. However, a hatch cover gantry crane is a piece of equipment with a narrow specialization. Its main task is to shift and remove multi-ton steel hatch covers to open the hold. Imagine a giant bandage covering a pit. It cannot be removed by hand, and doing it with a regular crane is too slow and dangerous. Our hero moves along rails directly over the hatch like a portal, neatly removing the covers section by section and stacking them right there on the deck. But as soon as the job is done, it must transform into a compact structure that does not interfere with the vessel’s departure to sea.

Why It’s More Complex Than It Seems

A vessel is never stationary. It rolls, lists up to 5 degrees, and endures powerful wind loads. The documentation specifies rigid parameters: wind pressure up to 400 Pa and temperatures down to -25°C. A shore-based crane is just a machine; a marine crane is a device that must operate under “rollercoaster” conditions. Its design must be not only robust but also “dynamic” — absorbing shocks, remaining operational during trim (when the vessel inclines toward the bow or stern up to 2 degrees), and staying securely fixed during a storm.

What it’s Made Of

To withstand the motion of the sea and heavy loads, engineers selected a specialized steel grade — 09G2S. This is not just iron, but an alloy that maintains its toughness in the cold and does not crack under stress. The entire structure is a massive assembly weighing tens of tons, built from heavy-duty welded beams.

The main components include:

  • Upper Frame: The “backbone” of the crane. Two powerful beams that support everything else.
  • Supports and Bogies: These hold the frame and allow it to move along the rails. Hidden inside each bogie are “rail clamps” (storm anchors) — clever locking mechanisms that grip the rail during a storm to prevent the crane from being swept overboard.
  • Winches and Spreader Beam: Two winches with a total power of 44 kW wind the steel wire ropes (hoisting lines) that lift a specialized spreader beam. It is the spreader that secures the load and prevents it from swinging between the supports.

The Secret Weapon: The Secondary Crane

The most interesting feature of this unit is the “auxiliary knuckle-boom crane”. It is essentially a smaller crane (3-ton capacity) mounted directly on the upper frame of the main unit. When there is a need to lift small cargo, tools, or perform overboard tasks, there is no need to engage the massive 20-ton mechanism. The manipulator extends (with a 4-meter reach), performs its task, and folds back. It is like having not just a sledgehammer in your arsenal, but a precision hammer as well.

How It Is Controlled

Forget about steering wheels and levers. Everything is operated via a compact belly-pack remote control. The operator stands on deck with a clear view of the load and directs the crane’s movement by pressing buttons. The speeds here are not for racing — hoisting is just 10 meters per minute. Why not faster? To ensure the precise positioning of multi-ton covers without smashing them or damaging the deck.

The control system is the “brain.” It ensures the crane does not collide with obstacles (via limit switches), prevents you from accidentally running both cranes simultaneously (interlocking), and ensures the rated load capacity is never exceeded.

Safety in Every Bolt

Marine equipment operates in an aggressive environment: saltwater, spray, and wind. Therefore, all electrical equipment here features an IP56 dust and water protection rating. The 2Ex d II T4 marking ensures the crane is spark-proof and safe even in explosive atmospheres (for instance, near fuel).

The design impresses with its attention to detail. For example, the travel bogies are equipped with specialized rail guards. These are not for aesthetics — they clear foreign objects from the rails to prevent the wheels from striking obstacles. Rubber buffers absorb impact energy if the crane reaches its end stops. Even the steel for the block axles is specialized — high-strength 30KhGSA (30HGSA) alloy, chosen to prevent shearing during sudden load jerks.

Summary

This crane is a perfect example of an engineering ecosystem. It is self-sufficient, intelligent, and adapted to life at sea. Its task is not just to lift a load, but to do so quickly, safely, and compactly, clearing the deck when it’s time to weather a storm. A vessel is an organism, and such a crane is one of its strong and precise muscles.
