The 1.2TX3.5M model is a slewing-arm marine davit designed for the launching and recovery of rescue boats weighing up to 1,200 kg. It guarantees safe and stable operation thanks to its integrated position sensors. Flexible control is provided via a local console or remotely — using levers on the arm or directly from within the boat. We offer both a complete “davit + boat” package and the supply of the davit unit alone to meet your specific requirements.

Boom

The boom is a welded L-shaped structure mounted on the slewing system. Its 3.5-meter outreach provides the necessary operating range, while the integrated hydro-pneumatic accumulator and remote slewing control handles ensure autonomy and convenient process management.

Hook block

The suspension assembly includes a wire rope with a poured socket, a swivel, an overhauling weight, and an automatic release hook. The swivel prevents the wire rope from twisting under load, while the release mechanism guarantees the timely and safe release of the boat or liferaft upon water entry.

Why It Is More Complex Than It Seems

Imagine a massive vessel rolling in the waves with a 20-degree heel, wind lashing your face, and the deck alternately dropping away and surging upward. In these conditions, you must not only stay on your feet but also safely launch a heavy rescue boat weighing as much as a small car. A standard crane simply won’t do—you need specialized equipment, a true maritime “skeleton” capable of operating amidst severe rolling and salt spray.

We are talking about the Launching and Recovery System (LARS)—the unsung hero of every maritime rescue operation. This structure allows a rescue boat weighing up to 1,200 kilograms to quickly depart from the vessel or return safely aboard.

What It Is Made Of

The engineers’ primary goal was to ensure the device could withstand both storms and Arctic cold. Therefore, the structure is based on high-strength 09G2S steel—the same metal used for icebreaker hulls and rugged northern pipelines. It does not become brittle in temperatures as low as -40°C and withstands fatigue from constant vessel vibration.

The entire structure consists of a three-meter L-shaped boom mounted on a powerful column (known as a “pedestal”). The pedestal is welded directly to the deck, becoming an integral part of it. No compromises: only welding, only secure attachment.

Hydraulic Muscles and Electric Nerves

Lifting a ton of cargo aboard is no job for the weak. The muscles of this device are hydraulic. AUP oil under a pressure of 16 megapascals (equivalent to a passenger car balancing on the area of a small coin) drives the hydraulic motors, powering the winch and the slewing mechanism.

The speed is not that of a race car, but it is impressive: the boat can be raised or lowered at a rate of 18 meters per minute. Furthermore, the boom with a load on the hook can slew almost in a full circle—up to 300 degrees. This is sufficient to retrieve the boat from any position and deliver it precisely to the launch point.

A Clever “Pin” and Smart Suspension

The most interesting detail is hidden at the end of the wire rope—the automatic release hook. As soon as the boat touches the water and the rope slackens, the mechanism triggers and releases the hook. The crew doesn’t need to unhook anything manually; the system handles it automatically. This is critical when every second counts and a wave is about to slam the boat against the hull.

To prevent the wire rope from twisting due to wind or movement, the system includes a swivel—a clever joint that dampens rotation. Additionally, an overhauling weight on the suspension ensures the rope remains taut at all times and does not become tangled.

How to Control It

The control cabinet and a portable console command the entire process. A ship’s electrician or the boat coxswain takes the console, connects it to the system, and gains full control. No complex levers— only intuitive buttons and indicators.

The developers have also included “foolproof” protection. The system features automatic limit switches that prevent the boat from crashing into the boom or hitting the deck. If anything goes wrong, the emergency stop will trigger. All electrical components are protected to the IP56 standard, meaning they are “resistant to both dust and water”

Such devices are installed on all modern vessels equipped with rescue boats. This is not just machinery; it is the final frontier of safety. In storms, fog, or darkness, the launching and recovery system must perform flawlessly. This is why its installation permits no margin of error, and every bolt and weld is verified against dozens of regulatory documents of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

General requirements and standards

  • The equipment complies with the “General Provisions for Technical Supervision” of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and is supplied with a Type Approval Certificate.
  • The equipment complies with the requirements of the Technical Regulation on the Safety of Maritime Transport.

Additional requirements

  • All equipment features counter-connections for piping; openings are sealed with standard plugs.
  • Instruction plates, signs, markings, and mimic diagrams are in Russian.
  • The scope of delivery includes spare parts, consumables, and tools for commissioning and one year of operation, as well as specialized tools for overhaul, adjustment, assembly, and installation.
  • The rescue boat complies with the requirements of the RS and the LSA Code.
  • Documentation includes:
    • RMRS (RS) Certificate according to Form 6.5.30;
    • Information regarding sanctions-related restrictions or the absence thereof;
    • Confidentiality agreement;
    • Procedures for testing and specialist training during equipment installation.
  • Painting according to the RAL number specified by the customer.
  • The equipment is provided with documents confirming compliance with the requirements of Government Decree No. 719, including current amendments.

Regulatory compliance

The equipment complies with the following requirements:

  • General Regulations of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS);
  • Technical Regulation on the Safety of Maritime Transport (Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 620 dated August 12, 2010);
  • SP 2.5.3650-20 (Sanitary and Epidemiological Requirements for Transport);
  • Other applicable requirements of Russian legislation, including sanitary and veterinary regulations, occupational health and safety requirements, and industrial safety requirements;
  • The equipment also complies with all amendments and supplements in force as of the vessel’s keel-laying date (Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 719);
  • Supervision of installation and commissioning services;
  • Confirmation of industrial product manufacturing within the territory of the Russian Federation (Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 719 dated July 17, 2015).
