Self-Propelled Trailer [Model 25 T]

The self-propelled trailer provides maneuverable handling for small craft weighing up to 25 tons. The design adapts to various hull types using interchangeable keel blocks, ensuring secure seafastening during transport.

A system comprising a diesel engine and hydraulic motors delivers torque to four drive wheels, guaranteeing reliable traction and stable movement even on challenging surfaces. The hydraulic drive and lifting hydraulics for the keel blocks provide smooth and precise operation, allowing for the safe handling of vessels at maximum capacity.

Self-Propelled Trailer 25T 3D Longitudinal Beams

Longitudinal beams

(highlighted in blue)

Longitudinal beams are load-bearing welded box-section beams that transfer the load from the keel blocks to the ground and serve as the foundation for the trailer’s movement. They integrate key components: wheel units, steering hydraulic cylinders, lighting equipment elements, and operating hydraulics with electronics are mounted on them. The left and right beams are mirrored, ensuring even load distribution and system stability during vessel transport.

Wheel units

(highlighted in grey)

Wheel units ensure reliable movement and maneuvering of the trailer with a load of up to 25 tons. The rear drive wheels are equipped with hydraulic motors, while the front driven wheels feature bearing units. Solid tires on steel rims guarantee stability and wear resistance under high loads.

Integrated hydraulic lifting cylinders precisely position and level the keel blocks under the vessel. The steering unit synchronously controls all eight wheels via a hydraulic drive, maintaining maneuverability even when operating at maximum capacity.

Power pack

(highlighted in blue)

The power pack connects the longitudinal beams and serves as the central hub for housing all control and power components of the trailer. The welded load-bearing frame integrates the diesel engine, fuel tank, batteries, hydraulic power unit, and control cabinet into a single compact system. The well-thought-out layout provides convenient access for quick maintenance, ensuring the stable operation of all systems.

Tie bar

(highlighted in blue)

The removable tie bar ensures structural rigidity, preventing the longitudinal beams from spreading while the trailer is in motion. Its lightweight and ergonomic welded design allows the operator to effortlessly carry and precisely position the bar by hand, providing secure fastening without the need for specialized equipment.

Harbor trailer for under-vessel docking

Imagine the task: you need to move a 25-ton boat across a port area. Not just move it, but carefully transport it for maintenance or launching. It might seem that a powerful tractor is all you need. However, there is a catch: the boat rests on special supports called keel blocks, and conventional machinery cannot drive underneath it. It is like trying to lift a heavy wardrobe by sliding your hands under only one side — it simply won’t work. You need a design that can embrace the load from both sides and crawl underneath. This is exactly the challenge solved by this specialized 25-ton capacity harbor trailer.

Why it is more difficult than it seems

The main challenge lies in the shape of the vessel and its supports. The keel blocks supporting the ship have a complex geometry. The trailer cannot simply back up to them like a standard tractor to a semi-trailer. It must literally “merge” into this structure from below and the sides. Therefore, engineers came up with a clever solution: the trailer is not a single solid unit. It consists of three massive sections: the left and right longitudinal beams (long “girders” with wheels) and the power pack — the “head” that houses all key systems. When assembled, this machine reaches 17 meters in length and 5.5 meters in width, yet its minimum height is only about one meter. This clearance is enough to carefully slide under the keel blocks, like a sheet of paper under a door.

Design and components

Each longitudinal beam is more than just a steel girder. It is a sophisticated structure made of high-strength steel plates, carrying four heavy-duty wheels. To ensure maneuverability, the wheels can steer up to 35 degrees. The most notable feature is the load-bearing units connecting the wheels to the frame, which house integrated hydraulic cylinders. These act like muscles: they lift the entire structure to press the keel blocks against the frame and level the trailer when traveling over uneven port terrain. The power pack serves as the heart and brain of the machine. Its welded frame houses a 36 kW diesel engine, fuel tank, hydraulic power unit, batteries, and two electrical cabinets—one for engine management and the other for motion control. The entire assembly is protected by a specialized cover to shield it from rain and coastal humidity.

Operation and control

Imagine having to control four pairs of steering wheels simultaneously. Doing this manually with a steering wheel would be impossible. Instead, the trailer functions as a hydraulic robot. The operator manages the unit via a compact console—either a stationary panel on the machine or a portable radio remote control. The console features joysticks for movement and dedicated toggle switches for rear-wheel steering, allowing the trailer to pivot almost on the spot.

Self-leveling magic

The most impressive technology is the self-leveling system. Imagine the trailer has driven under the keel blocks and lifted them along with the vessel. The weight is distributed unevenly, and the port surface is far from perfect. If you simply start moving, the structure could tilt, risking damage or a fall. The system works as follows: upon the “Lift” command, the hydraulic cylinders extend by 250 mm. 70 mm is used to pick up the keel block, while the remaining 180 mm serves as the “operating range” for leveling. Specialized sensors—inclinometers—constantly monitor the frame’s position in space. If one corner dips, the computer instructs the hydraulics to extend the corresponding cylinder further to compensate for the tilt. The operator simply accompanies the trailer while the machinery ensures the load remains perfectly horizontal.

Safety systems

Given that a 13-ton trailer carries loads several times its own weight, safety is a top priority. It features several wheel-lock modes, and a visual and audible alarm automatically activates during movement to warn those nearby. The control panel includes an “emergency stop” button that instantly halts all mechanisms. Should the engine stall or the hydraulics fail, a manual pump is provided to release brake pressure, allowing another tractor to tow the unit for repair.

This trailer is a prime example of how mechanics, hydraulics, and electronics merge into a single organism, capable of performing tasks beyond human strength while making complex port operations fast and safe.
