Stern A-frame launch and recovery system (LARS), SWL 2 t (Technical supply specification)

1. General Data (Operating Conditions)

The A-frame LARS operates reliably under the following marine environmental conditions:

  • Design ambient air temperature: +25 °C with 80% humidity in summer; −30 °C with wind speed up to 25 m/s (hull structure design temperature: −40 °C) with 85% humidity in winter; water temperature ranges from +32 °C to −2 °C respectively;
  • Shipboard vibration;
  • Periodic seawater splashing of components;
  • Machinery installed in enclosed spaces remains fully operational at ambient air temperatures up to +45 °C;
  • Sea state up to 3.

2. Purpose

The A-frame LARS is designed for lifting operations.

About

Extreme Aft Deck Environments

Consider the aft deck of a research vessel, where operations demand maximum speed and safety. With a sea state building on the horizon, ambient temperatures shifting between −30 °C and +25 °C, and a 2-tonne load to retrieve, standard lifting appliances risk downtime or component failure. The A-frame LARS by Izhora Hydrosystems operates flawlessly under these conditions.

Limitations of Standard Equipment

Marine environments impose unique demands on lifting appliances. Hull vibration, persistent seawater spraying, sea states up to 3, and operations at up to 10° heel and 2° trim will compromise standard frames. Conventional systems often require dedicated machinery spaces, face ambient temperature constraints, or compromise safety during high-load outreach operations. Historically, domestic shipbuilders relied on imported equipment, driving up project lead times and procurement costs.

Marine Engineering Solution

The A-frame LARS is specifically engineered for offshore environments. The welded steel structure withstands shipboard heel and vibration, while hydraulic cylinders equipped with counterbalance valves and end-of-stroke sensors ensure precise outreach control. A hydraulic power unit (HPU) operating at pressures up to 240 bar, a portable HPU in a splashproof enclosure, and a control system with dual control panels enable safe, efficient lifting operations from any deck location.

Protection and Versatility

Equipment versatility and environmental protection are core design features. IP56 ingress protection secures all open-deck electrical components, materials resist temperature fluctuations from −30 °C to +40 °C, and the coating system and preservation coatings allow storage for 12–18 months without performance degradation. Power supply cables feature mating connectors, and the complete scope of supply includes all necessary fasteners and cable glands for streamlined installation.

Performance Data and Capabilities

The A-frame features an SWL of 2 tonnes with overall dimensions of 8×8 m and a 6 m outreach beyond the stern roller. Factory acceptance tests (FAT) and RMRS certification confirm compliance for operations down to −40 °C. Floodlights, control cabinets, and HPUs are fully protected against moisture and marine salinity, enabling 24/7 operations in all weather conditions. The comprehensive scope of supply includes a 3-year spare parts kit (SPIR) to ensure long-term operation without downtime.

Reliability and Design Integrity

The A-frame LARS delivers a robust solution for domestic vessels to execute complex lifting operations without risk of mechanical failure or delay. From hydraulics to coating systems, and from the portable HPU to optimized marking and packaging, every component is engineered for maximum performance in marine environments. This design philosophy ensures crew safety, minimizes downtime, and guarantees predictable load handling under the most severe conditions.
