About

Suspended Davit Systems: Precision Engineering in Severe Maritime Environments

A vessel’s rescue boat is critical safety equipment required for emergency maneuvers and daily operations under conditions where any failure can jeopardize lives. For this reason, the engineering team at Izhora Hydrosystems developed this suspended davit system (LARS) to meet the highest technical standards.

The suspended davit system with an SWL of 2.3 tonnes provides an optimal balance of stability, reliability, and adaptation to unpredictable sea states. The system ensures safe, smooth, and precise deployment of the boat, regardless of vessel motion, wind, freezing temperatures, and deck instability.

Automated Functions and Operational Control

Rescue operations often occur during extreme weather conditions involving vessel motion, heel, heavy seas, and limited visibility. To mitigate these risks, the davit system features automated control functions that monitor lowering speeds, adjust to wave action, and decelerate near the water entry point. This support ensures reliable crew operation under high-stress conditions.

The control system includes two independent stations: a fixed control panel and a portable remote control unit. This configuration allows operators to control the system from the most advantageous deck position and maintains functional control during emergency scenarios.

Protection, Redundancy, and Readiness

The davit system is engineered for harsh environments, including northern latitudes, high sea states, and icing conditions. The design prevents moisture accumulation from condensation, operates across wide temperature ranges, and includes dedicated floodlights for nighttime operations.

The system incorporates power redundancy to maintain operational availability during a main power failure. Automatic switchover to the emergency power supply enables uninterrupted completion of the deployment sequence, fulfilling a critical safety requirement for marine vessels.

Compliance and Vessel Integration

The davit system is fully compliant with the rules of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS) and international standards, including SOLAS regulations. The technical design aligns with the operational requirements of the modern fleet, including fishing vessels, large-tonnage offshore platforms, and expedition vessels.

This heavy-duty system ensures operational availability in all weather conditions across diverse vessel classes.

4. Additional Requirements

  • The davit system is equipped with an off-load release hook for rapid deployment of the rescue boat.
  • Launching of the rescue boat with full complement is compliant with SOLAS requirements.
  • Recovery of the rescue boat with full complement is ensured in sea states up to sea state 5 inclusive.
  • Launch and recovery of the rescue boat is ensured at carrier vessel speeds up to 5 knots inclusive in calm water.
  • Launch and recovery of the rescue boat is executed via a single-point suspension.
  • The davit system complies with all RMRS rules applicable to rescue boat launching appliances.
  • The control system enables operation of the davit system from both the fixed control station and the portable remote control unit.
  • Launch and recovery operations from the fixed station are controlled via a joystick, providing proportional winch wire paying out/heaving in speed based on the lever deflection angle.
  • Launch and recovery operations from the portable remote control unit are controlled via a joystick, providing proportional winch wire paying out/heaving in speed based on the lever deflection angle.
  • The control system provides automatic deceleration to low speed as the boat approaches the davit boom tip.
  • The control system provides automatic shutdown when the boat reaches the upper limit position.
  • The davit winch incorporates a constant tension (CT) wave-compensation function.
