Hydraulically Operated Watertight Closure 6.2m x 8.0m (Technical supply specification)

1. General Information (Operating Conditions)

The watertight closure operates reliably under marine conditions with the following parameters:

  • Design ambient air temperature: +45°C at 80% humidity in summer, and -40°C with wind speeds up to 25 m/s at 85% humidity in winter;
  • Seawater temperature: from +32°C to -2°C;
  • Shipboard vibration;
  • Intermittent seawater splashing of components;
  • Heel up to 5° port/starboard;
  • Trim up to 2° bow/stern.

Operating conditions in stowed position:

  • Ambient air temperature: -40°C to +45°C
  • Ship heel: up to 15°
  • Ship trim: up to 5°
  • Wind pressure: max. 2000 Pa
  • Shipboard vibration

2. Purpose

The watertight closure is designed to seal an opening in the ship’s hull. The seal integrity prevents water, dust, and external elements from entering the hangar, including at static heel angles up to 5° and trim up to 2° at minimum draft.

About

Watertight Closure: Reliable Protection

Marine engineering prioritizes safety and durability. One of the core components ensuring the integrity of vessel compartments is the watertight closure. While performing a function similar to doors or gates ashore, its operational requirements are significantly higher: to withstand hydrostatic pressure, vessel motions, and heavy wind loads while maintaining complete seal integrity.

Operational Importance

The marine environment is unpredictable. Vessels encounter heavy seas, high winds, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Under these conditions, compartment seal integrity is a critical safety requirement rather than a matter of convenience.

The watertight closure protects internal spaces against water ingress, dust, and aggressive environmental factors. It maintains equipment in a dry, operational state, ensuring the longevity of shipboard systems and crew safety.

Operating Principle

The design features heavy-duty panels that lock firmly into the coaming structure to form a watertight barrier. The closure is actuated by a hydraulic drive system, ensuring reliable and efficient operation. Operational availability is maintained under vessel heel and trim conditions.

The control system enables operation from both the remote control station and local control points, while heavy-duty sealing materials ensure durability and resistance to seawater exposure.

Applications

The watertight closure is implemented wherever the protection of machinery, equipment, or cargo from moisture ingress is critical. These systems are particularly essential for naval and research vessels operating in harsh climatic conditions where operational safety cannot be compromised.

Domestic Production

These systems are manufactured within the Russian Federation. Izhora Hydrosystems LLC (i-hydro.ru) produces hydraulically operated watertight closures for various vessel classes. Engineering expertise ensures compliance with maritime industry standards and validation through physical deployment testing.

Impact on Vessel Operations

Reliable closures optimize internal layout configurations and onboard logistics, enabling safe crew and equipment transit during heavy sea states. Implementation enhances overall vessel system efficiency, supporting operational planning within space constraints while ensuring comprehensive equipment protection.
